SEHS Class of 61
Written Memorial Copies
Items shown here
are written memorial copies that have been made
possible to share with others from our class. If you happen to have one
for a classmate and wish to share here, please by all means send it in to me and I will post it
here to share. Scanning works great. If you have current photo's please send them along and I
will post them. Light
blue for boys and pink for girls.
Just cuts down on simple confusion.
I decided to leave the hyper-links for
locations and such hooked up. That
does not mean that they are still going
to work, if still active. It has
been a few years for some of these and
they might not be hyper on the other end
any longer. Chances are yours.
Please understand that some of the
photo's are not transferable to the web
page. Portable documents that are
sent to me have to be retyped by me and
I can't get the photo out. If some
of you know how to do that let me know,
please.

James W. "Jim" Brooke February 5, 1943 - April 30, 2011
|
Long time Sisters resident Jim Brooke took his leave of this earth on April 30, from a hemorrhagic stroke a week prior. Jim's final days resembled a good nap, which during his life gave him an extreme sense of joy. Known to all for his cheery attitude, he loved to watch the comings and goings of Sisters from his favorite sunny spot on the porch of the big red house.
Born to Dr. and Mrs. James W. Brooke on February 5, 1943, in New York City, Jim grew up in Eugene, where he ran with a pack of like-minded boys and honed his love of a good practical joke. The star of South Eugene High School, he went on to Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. where he received a bachelor's degree in biology. In 1965 he returned to the Eugene area, where he worked in the wood products industry and spent some time as a commercial fisherman out of Reedsport. He married Sandy Bingham in 1978 and became the father of his only daughter, Christen.
Bend Research and a job as a chemist brought the family to Central Oregon in 1979. At Bend Research he was credited with three patents. Jim had already spent time in 1977 working as a science teacher at Bend High. Jim enjoyed the Central Oregon outdoor lifestyle with his family and was always looking for more ways to have fun, like flying ultra-light aircraft, boating, camping and hiking. Some may remember him as the ring announcer for Deschutes Station's Saturday night fights.
His gracious ability to share his beautiful mind with everyone he knew was his gift to us, and all who knew him loved him.
Jim is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Rich and Liz Brooke of Lake Oswego; nephew and niece-in-law, Rich and Nikki Brooke; and grandnieces Charlotte and Madison, of Beaverton; nephew Jim Brooke of Lake Oswego; nieces, Karli Middlewood Lee of Brisbane, Australia, and Psyche de Christo of Malibu; daughter Christen; son-in-law Christian; and grandchildren, Sydney and Chance Gladu of Bend. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Kristine Brooke Middlewood.
A celebration of life potluck will be held Saturday, May 28, 2 to 5 p.m. at Daggett's, 282 W. Main Ave., Sisters. Memorial contributions can be made to the Kiwanis Food Bank, P.O. Box 1296, |

Skin Diver’s Final Service Set
Thursday
Funeral services will be held Thursday
morning for a 17-year old Eugene Boy who
drowned Saturday afternoon while skin
diving in Odell Lake, 70 miles southeast
of Eugene.
The body of Steven Jesse Groves
was recovered shortly afternoon Monday
in about 200 feet of water.
He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. G. C.
Groves 3251 W. 18th Ave., and would have
been a senior next year at South Eugene
High School.
The Lane County coroner’s office said
Tuesday that the youths body was
recovered by two volunteer divers,
Robert Bowmark of Eugene, and Lyle Scott
of Creswell.
The coroner’s office said James Dawe, of
2005 Todd St.,
Eugene, was skin
diving with Groves in about 125 feet of
water Saturday when the oxygen supply
ran out in a tank carried by
Groves. They were off of the north
shore.
Dawe told the coroner’s office he
attempted to share his source of oxygen
and to help Groves to the surface. The
unsuccessful rescue was hampered by 16
pound weights worn by the divers to
reach the 125 ft level, the coroner’s
office said.
Groves was born March 27, 1943, at
Decatur, Ill.. He was a member of the
First Christain Church. McGaffey’s
Eugene Memorial Chapel is handling
funeral arrangements.
A memorial is being
established and contributions to the
fund may be made in Groves memory.
Survivors also include two brothers,
Gary C. and Gregory T., both of Eugene.
